Tomas Kaberle skates with Rangers as blueline deals with injuries

The New York Rangers are currently without three of their top six defenseman. They’ve allowed three or more goals in five of their last six games. So, Tomas Kaberle is the answer?

The 36-year old defender has been invited to skate with the Rangers as they sort out the mess that is their current blue line.

Kaberle hasn’t played in the NHL since the 2013 season when he was a member of the Montreal Canadiens. He spent the 2013-14 campaign playing 48 games with Kladno of the Czech Extraliga and was in training camp with the New Jersey Devils on a tryout, playing two preseason games before being released.

“I still feel I can play in this league, that’s why I’m here,” Kaberle said via Andrew Gross.

When no offers came after being released by New Jersey, Jaromir Jagr, who owns Kladno, talked about the possibility of luring Kaberle back to play for the club, which was relegated last season and is currently toiling at the bottom of the Czech 1.liga standings.

“From what I saw, I liked a lot things that I saw out there. But it’s one skate,” said Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault on Friday.

Vigneault couldn’t expand on any plans for Kaberle seeing as how the team plays back-to-back this weekend followed by a day off on Monday. Basically, Kaberle is “day-to-day.” Depending on how quickly the blueline gets healthy, he could find himself in a situation similar to that of Scott Gomez with the Devils — went to camp on a tryout, remains unsigned and skates with the team when they’re at home.

Dan Boyle, who’s on the mend from a broken hand, said he should be ready next week. Meanwhile, the suspended John Moore is eligible to re-join the team on Tuesday against the Penguins.
