Tim Thomas dealt to Stars as dream tandem with Luongo dies
The idea that Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas could co-exist on a team was probably a far-fetched dream anyway.
A day after the Florida Panthers made a huge splash in acquiring Luongo from the Vancouver Canucks, Thomas is on his way to the Dallas Stars.
Thomas will backup Kari Lehtonen as the Stars try to find a way back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. As of Wednesday, they sit in the second wild card spot, seven points behind the Minnesota Wild with the Phoenix Coyotes, Winnipeg Jets and Vancouver Canucks right behind them.
Dan Ellis, who served as Lehtonen's backup this season, is heading the other way, so bringing on Thomas and his experience is an upgrade for Stars GM Jim Nill. Ellis still has another year left on his deal, while Thomas is a UFA this summer and will likely fetch plenty of interest.
After Tuesday night's game against the Boston Bruins, Thomas didn't want to comment on Luongo's arrival until after speaking with Panthers GM Dale Tallon. Thomas even joked, "It looks like Dale went kicking some tires and found one that needed pumping.''
We'll never know what the Luongo-Thomas buddy reality show would be like. Such a shame.
We'll give this one three Milburys. The Panthers weren't making the playoffs this season and Thomas was not going to be their goalie of the future. He could have been moved earlier, before acquiring Luongo, and potentially fetched a better haul.
