Stanley Cup Final: Five keys to Lightning vs. Blackhawks in Game 5

Stanley Cup Final: Five keys to Lightning vs. Blackhawks in Game 5

TAMPA – The Tampa Bay Lightning host the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday, scheduled for 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

The series is tied 2-2. Here are five keys for Game 5:

1. Bish or no Bish? Jon Cooper said after Saturday’s morning skate that he wasn’t sure if Ben Bishop or Andrei Vasilevskiy would start Game 5. Bishop skated and spoke to the media afterward, saying “There's progress being made since the beginning,” but he also did that before Game 4 where he was scratched and Vasilevskiy stopped 17 of 19 shots he faced in a loss. Lightning players were more concerned about their inability to finish chances in the 2-1 defeat. Bishop hasn't played since Game 3, so he's had plenty of time to rest. The Blackhawks likely won’t know who’s starting until warmups, but having now seen both Tampa netminders for at least one game, they know the scouting reports.

2. Take advantage of the advantage. Tampa has only scored on one of their 11 power-play chances in the Final. The Blackhawks have done a good job of suppressing Grade A opportunities and shut down an extra man unit that has scored 17 times this postseason. For as tight as this series has been — all four games decided by one goal — a successful power play could be a gamechanger.

3. Get the stars going offensively. Among Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa, Patrick Sharp, Steven Stamkos and postseason leading scorer Tyler Johnson, they have a total of two goals this series. The chances have been there, but depth has been a big factor through four games.

4. All about adrenaline. It’s June 13. Both teams have been playing games since mid-September. Bodies are breaking down and tired; but with at most three games left in the season, everyone is playing through something. “I don't think anybody's tired this time of year,” said Duncan Keith before the series. He’s right. Both teams are halfway to their ultimate goal. There’s no time to be tired now.

5. Not a must-win game. Despite what numerous members of the media have asked both Blackhawks and Lightning players this week, Game 5 isn’t a must-win for either team. I think many people pegged this series to go the distance and with how close it’s been through four games, would you be surprised if we’re back at Amalie Arena Wednesday night for the season finale?
