Sheldon Souray to miss up to six months with wrist injury; Ducks sign Fistric
Significant news from the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, as a thin defense got a little thinner thanks to Sheldon Souray’s wrist injury.
Sheldon Souray suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist while working out (off the ice) on July 17. He had surgery to repair the damage at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles on July 25 (Dr. Steven Shin). He is expected to be out four-to-six months (from the time of surgery).
That puts Souray’s return around December or January, taking away a physical presence and power-play point man for most of the season’s first half.
The Ducks filled the spot with 27-year-old Mark Fistric, who had six assists in 25 games with the Edmonton Oilers last season.
Fistric plays the left side, which is where Souray plays. We’re guessing Luca Sbisa might get a bit more ice time in Souray’s absence, but it’ll be interesting to see where Bruce Boudreau turns for his top-pairing partner with Francois Beauchamin.
Maybe a few months off keeps Souray fresh for later in the season. Then again, they saw him become a pylon by the end of last year’s 48-game season, becoming a defensive liability and a healthy scratch in the postseason.
