Ron Wilson ready for golf but would 'entertain' idea of NHL return

The U.S. earned their fourth medal in seven years at the World Junior Championship by claiming bronze following an 8-3 win over Sweden on Tuesday. Ryan Donato and Matthew Tkachuk scored twice, while Auston Matthews finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with seven goals.

The head coach of the Americans, long-time NHL bench boss Ron Wilson, was a surprise choice when USA Hockey announced his hiring in June, having last coached internationally at the 2010 Olympics. After guiding the U.S. to a bronze, does he have eyes on an NHL return?

Not really.

Via Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star:

So what’s next for him?

“Golf. I’m serious,” he said. “I’m not expecting anything from anybody else. I didn’t come here with that in mind. I came here to take three weeks off from golf and try to accomplish as much as we did.”

But if an NHL team called?

“I would entertain that, for sure,” said Wilson. “But as far as I’m thinking, but I’m not hoping for anything. I just wanted to get something done in this tournament.”

Wilson said he wasn’t planning on coaching again until USA Hockey reached out and he wanted to give back to the organization that he’s served numerous times. He added that he had some doubts about his abilities following his three-and-a-half playoff-less seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he trusted himself and took the World Junior gig with confidence.

What about leading the Americans again next year when Montreal and Toronto host the tournament? Don't count on it.
