Ron Hextall back with Flyers, probably as their GM when Holmgren’s fired
The Philadelphia Flyers lured Ron Hextall from the Los Angeles Kings’ front office on Monday, bringing the former goaltending legend in as assistant general manager/director of hockey operations/probably the guy who replaces Paul Holmgren one day as GM.
That’s all speculation, of course: Holmgren has been the Flyers’ general manager since 2006, and received a vote of confidence from team chairman Ed Snider after the Flyers missed the playoffs.
Granted, he also gave one to Ilya Bryzgalov and … welp.
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that Ron Hextall has been named Assistant General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren. “We are very pleased to welcome back Ron Hextall to our management team,” said Holmgren. “Ron has a wealth of experience in the front office in various capacities which will be a valuable addition to our staff.”
Hextall, 49, returns to the Flyers organization after spending the last seven seasons with the Los Angeles Kings as Vice President/Assistant General Manager, which included the team’s run to the Stanley Cup Championship in 2012.
He also served as the club's General Manager of the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, the Kings’ primary affiliate. At the helm of the Monarchs, Hextall helped the team to an overall record of 290-205-24-32 in seven seasons and an appearance in the Calder Cup Playoffs in each season, including twice in the Conference Finals.
He served as director of pro hockey personnel for the Flyers from 2002-06 as well.
Hextall, of course, was a Flyers goalie for 13 years. His 489 games played and 240 wins as a Flyer rank him first all-time in Flyers history. He’s in the Hockey Hall of Fame, (Ed Note: Not yet ...) and is a former Conn Smythe winner. He was also the nastiest [expletive] to play between the pipes not named Billy Smith.
He’s been groomed for a general manager’s spot for years, and was on the short list for the Columbus Blue Jackets at one point for their general manager’s gig.
So yeah, Holmgren might want to walk around with a rear-view mirror attached to his tie this season.
Lord knows “fire Homer, promote Hexy” would be an easier sell to Flyers fans than a T-shirt that emasculates Sidney Crosby.
