Rather than trim down to two goalies, Kings just trade Dan Carcillo to Rangers

Jonathan Quick will likely start for the Kings on Saturday night versus the Vancouver Canucks (setting up a possible Olympic goaltending showdown!), but it's also possible that he won't. And if he doesn't, Martin Jones will get the start.

It sets up a tricky situation for the Kings, who need to clear a roster spot to activate Quick. The easiest solution would be sending Jones back to the AHL, of course, but you sort of need Jones around in case Quick's not ready to go. Dodgy situation, that. Nobody wants to lose a player if you don't have. I guess you could start, like, Ben Scrivens, who also exists, with Quick on the bench as a backup. Or maybe you could --

Nevermind. Just trade Dan Carcillo. Whatever. From the Kings:

The Los Angeles Kings have acquired a seventh-round selection in the 2014 NHL Draft from the New York Rangers in exchange for forward Daniel Carcillo, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Carcillo, 28, has played in 26 games with the Kings this season, recording two points (1-1=2) and 57 penalty minutes. The 6-0, 200-pound native of King City, Ontario was acquired by the Kings in a trade with Chicago on July 16, 2013. In 359 career games with the Kings, Blackhawks, Flyers and Coyotes Carcillo has 89 points (41-48=49) and 1,136 penalty minutes.

Yes, that's right. The Kings have acquired a seventh-round selection. That's what's going on here.

Rather than feeling out their goaltending situation, L.A. decided they'd just give Dan Carcillo away. Meh. Here. You take him.

Works out well for the Rangers, I guess. The trade fills a hole that opened up after Derek Dorsett went down with a leg injury. From Blueshirts United:

Less than 24 hours after losing rugged forward Derek Dorsett for the next 4-6 weeks with a broken fibula, the Rangers went out and acquired Dan Carcillo from the Los Angeles Kings Saturday afternoon in exchange for a conditional seventh round draft pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.

"We picked up a player than can bring an element of toughness, with us losing Dorsett yesterday for 4-6 weeks it's an area we felt we needed to get a little bit better," explained head coach Alain Vigneault prior to the Rangers game Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. "Dan became available and we picked him up."

Vigneault added that it was "a low-risk move", likely because, as the Kings just showed, Carcillo isn't very important.
