Rangers force Game 7 thanks to Brassard’s goal, Lundqvist’s shutout (Video)

The New York Rangers have managed just one goal in each of their three losses to the Washington Capitals in their first-round series, so it stood to reason that, with the club facing elimination in Game 6, scoring more than one goal was a big part of the game plan.

They weren't able to do it. They were, however, able to push the Capitals to a Game 7 nonetheless, as Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves for his first shutout of Round 1 in a 1-0 victory.

The lone goal came off the stick of Derick Brassard, then off the glove of Capitals' defenceman Steve Olesky before finding its way past Braden Holtby.

It was hardly a pretty one, but not much in this game was pretty, except for Lundqvist.

His goaltending, too. Lundqvist was stellar, especially once the Rangers took the lead and the Capitals pressed for the equalizer. This save on an great Alex Ovechkin chance was a beauty:

Lundqvist's back-to-back saves on Jason Chimera and Joel Ward at the ten-minute mark of the final frame were also lovelies, as was his work with Braden Holtby -- who was also near-flawless in this one -- on the bench for the extra attacker.

But it wasn't all Lundqvist. The Rangers didn't give him a whole lot of run support, but they also avoided making life harder on him by going down a man all game. New York has gotten into some penalty trouble in this series, but they were Family Channel-clean in Game 6.

The result: Game 7 goes Monday. It's the second year in a row the Capitals and the Rangers have needed a seventh and deciding game. Last year it was at Madison Square Garden. This time around, it's at the Verizon Center. Can the Capitals seize their home-ice advantage like the Rangers did last year?
