Patrick Kane adds to trophy case with beer league MVP honors

It’s been a pretty good summer for Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks. Sure, his team came an overtime goal short of playing for the Stanley Cup again, but Kane has certainly enjoyed his off-season.

Last month, Kane and Jonathan Toews inked separate eight-year, $84 million contracts. He also defended his dance-off crown at the Blackhawks Convention against Captain Serious. There was also the Ice Bucket Challenge entry. In between the upgrading of tax brackets, his charitable efforts and some Footloose’ing, he has done some work on his game.

While home in Buffalo, Kane has been keeping busy with beer league hockey. In three games with the Piranhas of the Performax Hockey League, no. 88 posted six goals and 14 points, including a five-goal, 10-point night during three wins. Even Scotty Bowman was impressed!

But he hasn’t stopped there. In another Buffalo beer league, this one founded by Sabres scout Nik Fattey, Kane led Milli Vanilli — which also featured Zemgus Girgensons of the Sabres, Cory Conacher of the New York Islanders and the immortal Vince Scarsella, who led the league with 25 goals — to the Fattey Hockey League championship Tuesday night.

One year after winning the Conn Smythe Trophy, Kane was bestowed another individual honor after being named the title game MVP.

Kane did his part in leading Milli Vanilli, who had lost three of four to the Pet Shop Boys before sweeping them in the best-of-3 final, by chipping in 14 goals, down from his 20 a year ago.

Earlier this month, after surprising a Chicago youth team with a renovated locker room, Kane talked with local media about going home and playing some beer league with his friends.

“I love the game. I love playing it whether it’s in the NHL or in a little men’s league during the summer," he said. "It’s obviously not all the same, but it’s still the game of hockey. You can enjoy that way.”
