P.K. Subban ejected from Game 1 after slashing Ottawa’s Mark Stone (Video)

P.K. Subban jumped up and down, stretching his arm out in a pose of disbelief as Mark Stone of the Ottawa Senators fell to the ice.

Subban didn’t think the play warranted a penalty.

Later, he stood at the bench incredulously, as it was announced he had been ejected from Game 1 of their series against the Ottawa Senators. Not for a nasty hit from behind. Not for a hit to the head. No, for a slash to the hands of Mark Stone that sent the rookie down to the ice in excruciating pain and then immediately to the dressing room.

For that, Subban was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct.

Stone and Subban were lined up at the faceoff circle, where Stone gave Subban a shot to the gloves after the draw. Stone went to the front of the net, where Subban cracked him on the right hand with his lumber.

Stone dropped like someone had taken a chainsaw to this wrist, and then left the ice.

The officials discussed the play for a few minutes, but upheld the call.

The Sens scored two power-play goals by Kyle Turris and Mika Zibanejab during the major, but also gave up a shorthanded goal to Lars Eller.

Rule 61.3 for the NHL states that a major penalty must be assessed if there’s an injury on the slash. And as per Rule 61.5, if a major penalty is handed out for slashing, “a game misconduct penalty must also be imposed.”

Ah, but was there an injury? Stone RETURNED TO THE OTTAWA BENCH during the second period.

So this is either a terrible call, or someone with Wolverine-like healing powers, or one of the most devious things we’ve ever witnessed, a clever ruse to get Subban ejected.
