P.K. Subban designed Winter Classic skates, looked retro awesome (Video)

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – He stepped off the bus looking like he was headed to a jazz show at a speakeasy. Dapper, tailored, with two bold fur lapels on his jacket that could have been mistaken for a shawl.

Or he looked like Darkwing Duck.

There’s always an expectation that P.K. Subban will be the most impeccably dressed player before and after the game, but he said he upped his style game for the 2016 Winter Classic, where the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Boston Bruins, 5-1, on Friday at Gillette Stadium.

“I always like to make sure I look my best. I thought it was a pretty cool outfit,” he said.

“I just felt the color scheme was something that someone might have worn back in the day. The cut and the style of the jacket and the suit are a little bit different,” said Subban.

“We didn’t want to go too old school. We didn’t want to go back to 1909.”

That was off the ice. On the ice, Subban also had some unique style: New skates, from the mind of P.K. Subban.

Here’s a clip he released on how he designed his “Skateman” limited edition blades, and had them made by CCM.

“The skates were a big part of me being a part of the Classic,” he said.

The brown skates were adorned by a few icons and symbols. There was a No. 4, in honor of the late Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau.

There were the ‘76’ numbers on the sides. There was the 1909 on the tongue – the year the Habs were founded – and “Change The Game,” Subban’s brand slogan, on the inside of the skate.

On the back, his “Skateman” brand logo.

There were four pairs of skates made. True to form for P.K. Subban, one of them has already been put up for a charity auction.

The pre-Winter Classic raffle resulted in a winner paying $50,000 to Subban’s foundation. They were flown to Boston, given tickets to the Winter Classic and hotel accommodations – as well as the skates off his feet.

Will we ever see Subban’s Winter Classic attire again?

“I don’t think the outfit gets retired,” he said, “and I don’t necessarily think the skates get retired. We’ll see.”
