NY Rangers captain Ryan Callahan injured after post-whistle scrum with Flyers’ Max Talbot

Ryan Callahan is a lynchpin in the New York Rangers’ lineup, the bridge between the team’s star players and their gritty grunts down the roster. He's a vital player; so it’s disheartening, to say the least, to see this scene play out on Tuesday night, in the Rangers’ 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers:

That’s Max Talbot of the Flyers putting Callahan’s left arm in a wringer, as the two toppled to the ice in a post-whistle scrum in the second period. Callahan immediately skated off, severely favoring his left arm and shoulder, and did not return.

The Rangers said Callahan, who scored the team’s second goal against the Flyers, will be evaluated on Wednesday.

Dave Lozo of NHL.com spoke with Talbot after the game:

"We decided to go and we were holding each other up and his shoulder popped out or something. Unfortunate. … I let him go. I kind of felt it, but then I saw his face as well."

Callahan has missed significant time in the past, suffering a broken hand in Dec. 2010 in a blocked shot and then breaking an ankle in April 2011 on a Zdeno Chara shot. He played 76 games for the Rangers last season.
