NHL Three Stars: Okposo tricks Oilers; Habs win second straight

No. 1 Star: Kyle Okposo, New York Islanders

Okposo tallied his second career hat trick and second four-point game as the Islanders routed the Edmonton Oilers 8-1 in a Super Bowl Sunday matinee. Two of Okposo’s three goals came via the power play. Nick Leddy chipped in three helpers and John Tavares also recorded three points in the win. Thirteen Islanders recorded at least a point. Thomas Greiss made 30 saves for his 50th career NHL win.

No. 2 Star: Ben Scrivens, Montreal Canadiens

Scrivens made 34 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped all five shots he faced in the shootout as the Canadiens edged the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1. Montreal has now won two in a row for the first time since late November. Sven Andrighetto scored the only goal of the shootout. In two starts this weekend, Scrivens has made 57 saves out of 59 shots and won both games.

No. 3 Star: Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals

Holtby made 33 saves and Alex Ovechkin scored his 30th goal of the season as the Capitals edged the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2. Matt Niskanen’s goal 5:24 into the third period snapped a 2-2 tie as the Capitals became the first team to hit the 80-point mark.

Honorable Mention: Flyers rookie defenseman Shayne Gostibehere recorded an assist to extend his point streak to eight games, the longest in team history for blueliners … Eric Staal and Andrei Markov both reached the 900-game mark … Markov picked up his 407th career assist, passing Guy Lapointe for second in among Canadiens defensemen in franchise history ... Connor McDavid scored his seventh of the year and now has six points in four games since returning from injury.

Did You Know? Ovechkin became the third player in NHL history to reach 30 goals in his first 11 seasons, joining Wayne Gretzky and Mike Gartner. (AP)

Dishonorable Mention: Philadelphia’s power play failed on five opportunities … The Capitals went 0-for-2 on the power play and have not scored in their last 17 chances with the extra man … Anders Nilsson was pulled before the end of the first period after allowing three goals on 10 shots ... Edmonton has lost nine straight road games against the Islanders.
