NHL Three Stars: Berra blanks Ducks; Jones, Sharks keep winning

No. 1 Star: Reto Berra, Colorado Avalanche

Berra stopped 35 shots and earned his second career shutout as the Avs blanked the Anaheim Ducks 3-0. Nathan MacKinnon, Jack Skille and John Mitchell scored for Colorado as the Ducks were shutout for the third time this season.

No. 2 Star: Martin Jones, San Jose Sharks

Jones continued his hot start with 31 saves in a 2-1 Sharks win over the New Jersey Devils after a shootout. Patrick Marleau scored the opening goal and Brent Burns and his silky mitts put home the winner in the shootout:

Jones set a Sharks franchise record by going 234:33 without allowing a goal, passing Alex Stalock.

No. 3 Stars: Eric Staal / Kris Versteeg, Carolina Hurricanes

The Canes captain and Versteeg each had three-point nights with a goal and a pair of assists during a 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Rookie Brock McGinn scored 55 seconds into his NHL debut, the fastest to do so since Alexander Mogilny in 1989.

Honorable Mention: Mike Babcock earned his first win as Toronto Maple Leafs head coach after a 6-3 defeat of the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets. Leo Komarov scored two late goals, Daniel Winnik handed out three assists, while Joffrey Lupul and Morgan Rielly recorded two points each … Blue Jackets forward Scott Hartnell had a goal and an assist and reached 600 career points in the process … Dustin Byfuglien broke a 1-1 tie late in the third period and Blake Wheeler put home an empty-netter as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Calgary Flames 3-1. Ondrej Pavelec made 19 saves. Wheeler and Bryan Little each had a goal and an assist:

Jake Allen made 31 saves and the St. Louis Blues held off a third period surge from the Vancouver Canucks to hang on for a 4-3 win and earn their third straight victory. Carl Gunnarsson, Alex Steen and Vladimir Tarasenko each recorded two points … Colton Parayko’s slapper is so legendary it’s already breaking panes of NHL glass:

Anze Kopitar’s overtime goal helped give the Los Angeles Kings their first win of the season as they beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1. Jonathan Quick made 25 saves and the Kings peppered Darcy Kuemper with 37 shots. LA defenseman Derek Forbort became the final player from the 2010 first round to reach the NHL.

Did You Know?

Dishonorable Mention: New Jersey’s 0-3-1 start is their worst since 2001-02 when they opened 0-4-0 … Columbus is now 0-5-0 and has allowed an NHL-worst 26 goals … Vancouver’s power play failed in all five of their opportunities … The Ducks have gone 91 shots without scoring a goal … Two hits on Ducks that may be worthy of discipline. First, Erik Johnson and Corey Perry:

And Tyson Barrie on Simon Despres, who did not return to the game:
