Nazem Kadri fined $5K by NHL for throat-slash gesture

Nazem Kadri fined $5K by NHL for throat-slash gesture

The NHL announced on Thursday that Nazem Kadri of the Toronto Maple Leafs has been fined $5,000 for making “inappropriate gestures” toward Mark Giordano of the Calgary Flames Tuesday night.

Giordano laid a clean hit on Kadri late in the first period and the Maple Leafs forward wasn’t pleased as he chirped the Flames defenseman from the bench.

“There was emotion, I couldn’t tell if it was a clean hit or not,” Kadri said afterward via the Toronto Sun. “I was told it was, but it certainly didn’t feel like it. It (the throat slash) is something I don’t really remember doing. I was in and out a little bit (he did go to the quiet room). I guess it’s going to be reviewed (by the league), but it was an emotional reaction.”

Kadri got off light here considering Nick Boynton, then of the Chicago Blackhawks, was suspended one game for making a similar gesture at Blair Jones following a 2010 preseason fight.

The $5,000 fine, which was handed out by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department, is the maximum allowable under the current CBA.

Don’t expect Kadri to do something like that again. Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello told Prime Time Sports on Wednesday that’s he’s spoken to Kadri about it.

“It’s not something that should transpire. Naz has been spoken to,” he said.
