Mitch Callahan's injury report: fractured jaw, 10 lost teeth after taking puck to mouth
By now, you probably have seen the selfie that Grand Rapids Griffins forward Mitch Callahan Tweeted on Wednesday night after taking a puck to the mouth. If you haven't consider yourself lucky. Extremely lucky.
The photo went viral as the Griffins finished off the Iowa Wild 6-1.
While setting up in front of Wild goaltender Johan Gustafsson during a power play, Callahan's roommate, defenseman Ryan Sproul, took a slapper from the point which drilled him right in the grill.
The total damage? A fractured jaw, ten lost teeth, a bunch of stitches and one unforgetttable selfie.
The image of seeing his good friend injured after one of his shots was quite traumatic for Sproul.

“I pretty much almost broke down right there,” Sproul said after practice Thursday. “I was scared for him, and went right over to make sure he was all right because, like I said, he’s one of my best friends.”
Callahan, the Griffins’ third-year forward, had surgery Thursday to repair his fractured jaw. He lost up to 10 teeth, some of which Sproul picked up off the ice, as well.
“I picked up four, but I think there was probably more out there,” he said. “I know he lost nine or 10 … It was definitely tough. I could barely pick them up my hands were shaking so much and in shock of what happened."
Sproul added that after the incident he found it tough to fire pucks on net with traffic in front. The image was still fresh in his head and is something he'll try to get over moving forward.
The Griffins hope to get their third-leading score back at some point during the AHL playoffs. In the meantime, Sproul will probably be making plenty of milkshakes for his roommate until he's full recovered.
