Matt Duchene scores beautiful goal on perfect Avs delayed penalty shift

Sometimes hockey highlights feature individual star efforts. Others involve a total team effort leading to a goal.

This moment from the Colorado Avalanche’s game against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night brings those two joys together in a single clip, as Matt Duchene finishes off a superb Colorado shift on a delayed penalty with a nasty dangle and snipe against Dan Ellis.

The sequence began with some incredible goaltending by Semyon Varlamov, as he stopped two Antoine Roussel shots and then a miraculous stop on a Shawn Horcoff rebound attempt. With Dallas’ Alex Goligoski taking a penalty, Colorado took control of the puck.

They possessed the puck for so long that the Avs completed a change. Duchene passed the puck back to P.A. Parenteau, who smartly ragged the puck back to the blue line in front of the Dallas bench to keep the Stars from changing themselves. His pass sprung Duchene in the middle of the ice, as he spun around Tyler Seguin, entered the offensive zone, skated past a fatigued Sergei Gonchar and fired the puck past Ellis for his second goal of the night.

Here’s another look where you can see Varlamov’s saves:

A total team effort goal, from the goalie’s saves to Duchene’s finish. That’s the way it’s been for the Avs this season.

His first goal of the night wasn't too shabby either.
