Martin Brodeur extends leave of absence from Blues through All-Star break

The St. Louis Blues announced last week that Martin Brodeur would take a leave of absence from the team to contemplate his future. With Brian Elliott back healthy, it meant they would carry three goaltenders and that the future Hall of Famer was at the bottom of the depth chart.

Brodeur isn’t supplanting Elliott or Jake Allen, but the Blues would love to have some insurance around in case of another injury. That apparently doesn’t line up with Brodeur’s desires as the netminder has extended his leave of absence by another week.

ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun spoke with Brodeur’s agent on Tuesday:

“With the All-Star break already on the way, the Blues have given Marty more time to reflect,” agent Pat Brisson of CAA Sports told ESPN.com Tuesday evening. “Everything should be clearer post All-Star next week.”

When he first announced he was taking time away from hockey, Brodeur’s decision caught head coach Ken Hitchcock off guard, but the Blues spoke of how much they appreciated having the veteran around and what they learned from him in his short time in St. Louis.

However, in seven appearances, Brodeur posted a 3-3-0 record, 2.87 goals against average and a .915 even-strength save percentage -- nothing that would really get GM Doug Armstrong's phone ringing.

Brodeur waited a while, but got a chance with the Blues. Will he sit on the sidelines again and wait for an injury to open another door? Or is this is the end of his legendary career?
