Kyle Palmieri slams Johnny Oduya into the boards, gets major (Update)

ANAHEIM Department of Player Safety alert at the Honda Center? Well probably not, but there was a major penalty and a guy who went in the boards, so who knows.

Ducks forward Kyle Palmieri slammed Chicago defenseman Johnny Oduya into the boards. The hit looked bad, but didn't exactly look totally illegal/suspension-worthy. Palmieri got five minutes for boarding and a game misconduct.

Here is the gif:

Oduya was bleeding after the play. His head went into the red part of the boards, which is indeed painful. But again, the play looked unintentional from a Palmieri perspective. And his point of contact was the shoulder.

Will Palmieri get a call from the NHL? He's not exactly a dirty guy with 57 penalty minutes in 146 NHL games. There's no prior history, and Oduya styed in the game.

Just one of those quick-decision plays.

Udpate: Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau addressed the play after the game. The following was his take from his press scrum:

"My view was he (Oduya) was falling, and he was turning at the same time, and that Palmieri didn’t change his direction, didn’t hit him in the head, just followed through with the check. I think because the Chicago bench stood up and everybody made a big deal about it, that’s why the penalty was called."
