KHL player celebrates goal in penalty box after delayed call, video review (Video)

Funny thing happened to Alexander Nesterov during Salavat Yulaev’s 5-1 win Monday against Jokerit. Early in the third period, he fired a shot by Riku Helenius, but the puck quickly bounced in and out of the net, leading to officials to continue play unsure if a goal had occurred.

The play was eventually whistled dead after Niko Kapanen was given a minor for roughing Nesterov. Taking offense, Nesterov scrummed it up with the Jokerit forward and ended up with a double minor. But the officials still needed to review Nesterov’s shot from earlier, and when they did they ruled it a goal, leading to the Salavat forward celebrating in the penalty box with Enver Lisin:

You might be thinking that since the penalties occurred after the goal was scored, they should be taken off the board once the play clock is reset to the time of the goal. But like in the NHL, since the three penalties called on the play came after the goal, they are to be assessed and served.

Now had Kapanen's minor been called before Nesterov's goal, then that penalty would be wiped away after the review was confirmed. Instead, the Salavat forward got to spend four minutes in the penalty box as a reward.
