Jaroslav Halak era in Buffalo ends, as Sabres ship goalie to Capitals
Four years ago, the Washington Capitals won the Presidents' Trophy and then proceeded to be eliminated in seven games by Jaroslav Halak and the Montreal Canadiens. But they appear to have put that behind them, or decided it's better to have him on their side this time.
Halak will be Washington's hope in goal as they battle for a postseason spot.
In one of the late-breaking deals of the day, the Capitals acquired Halak from the Buffalo Sabres along with a third round pick for goaltender Michal Neuvirth and Rusty Klesla.
The problem is here is that goaltending isn't the issue for the Capitals; their defense is. Halak had better get used to seeing some extra rubber, as Washington has allowed 33.4 shots per game this season. Halak faced 25 shots per game during his 40 games with St. Louis this year.
In grading this deal, we give it two Milburys.
Neuvirth still has a year and $2.5 million coming to him, and while he may not have had a future in Washington, GM George McPhee could have/should have flipped him for help in an area of need for the Capitals.
The Caps do free up future cap space (approximately $17.8 million this summer) shipping out Neuvirth and Klesla, but how confident would you be in this blue line going forward?
