Jaromir Jagr's complicated commitment to KHL next season
News that former Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers star Jaromir Jagr re-signing with Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia surfaced a week or so ago. At the time Avangard's general manager Anatoli Bardin refused to confirm the report. Speaking today on the matter, Bardin said:
"Jagr will be with our team. You shouldn't doubt that. We will announce the details before the start of the new season."
It is understood that the team and Jagr have reached the agreement in principle, although no contract has been signed yet (Russian site).
How much Jagr will make in the KHL next season is also a mystery. After Avangard's failure to advance past the first round of the playoffs, it is understood all players will be offered much lower deals. From Russian language Omskinform.ru, Bardin said:
"Losing in the first round is a catastrophe for us. And, of course, everyone will have to lower their financial demands. To those players, whose contracts are ending right now, we will offer 50 percent of the old one."
It is understood that the pay-cut will affect even Jaromir Jagr. He will reportedly make "a lot less" than he did last year, although all of the details of the Czech's new contract have not been made public.
One more thing: Apparently there was a rumor that Avangard's contract with its main sponsor had a "secret clause" that financing for the team will diminish if Jagr leaves. Bardin dismissed the rumor saying it was not true. But it's still interesting.
