James Wisniewski fights flu, nets three points, leaves it all on the ice, literally
It's not exactly comparable to what Michael Jordan did in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals, but Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman James Wisniewski had himself a big night against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday, all while battling back the flu bug.
Wisniewski did not partake in the morning skate on Tuesday and was listed as a game-time decision by Blue Jackets head coach Todd Richards. After the game, the 29-year old blueliner said a decision was made for him to play minutes after warmups ended, citing his feeling much better skating as opposed to when he was on the bench or in the locker room.
When he did play, during Columbus' 4-1 win, Wisniewski took 20 shifts, played 19:08, tied a career high in points with a goal and two assists and likely set his own personal record for times getting sick on the ice during a game.

Wisniewski had one goal and two assists in the 4-1 victory in front of 14,357 at Nationwide Arena. He also vomited twice.
“It was … the energy drinks I’d been putting down all day,” Wisniewski said. “I got hit hard right at the end of the game, too, and I felt my stomach lurch again. I was like, ‘Oh, no,’ and then I heard the final buzzer sound.
Thankfully, Portzline and the rest of the Columbus media didn't get into deep detail about how Wisniewski spent his day between the morning skate and game time. The most he would reveal was that he was up at 6 a.m. and, ahem, "fluids were leaving my body." Awesome.
