Islanders ship out Nino Niederreiter to Wild for Cal Clutterbuck

NEWARK -- Nino Niederreiter grew unsatisfied with his role in the New York Islanders organization last season. After a 2011-12 season that saw him scored once in 55 games, the 20-year old Swiss native, through his agent, requested a trade.

He didn't get it right away, but during the first round of the NHL Draft on Sunday, Niederreiter got his wish.

The Islanders dealt Niederreiter to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forward Cal Clutterbuck and a third round pick, No. 70 overall.

On Sunday, Michael Russo of the Star Tribune reported that Clutterbuck's time in Minnesota was likely done. The 25-year old is currently a restricted free agent, with Niederreiter still one season left before he hits RFA status.

It's a deal that works out for both teams with the Islanders acquiring some toughness down the lineup and penalty kill help while giving Niederreiter a fresh start to grow in Minnesota.

Earlier Sunday, Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher dealt defenseman Justin Falk to the New York Rangers to Benn Ferriero and 2014 sixth rounder.
