Hugh Jessiman suffers gum malfunction in KHL goal celebration (Video)

Hugh Jessiman is, of course, the last player from the 2003 NHL Draft’s first round to appear in a National Hockey League, making a cameo appearance for two contests with the Florida Panthers in 2010-11. The New York Rangers selected him before Dustin Brown and Brent Seabrook went in the following two picks, and Zach Parise, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Ryan Kesler and Mike Richards went later. Good times.

He’s taken his talents to the Russian Kontinental Hockey League, playing for Medvescak. Chewing gum while celebrating a goal is, apparently, not among those talents.

Check out the end of this KHL clip as Jessiman scores against Salavat Yulaev on Friday, only to have a gum malfunction.

After scoring his goal, Jessiman went to the corner with gum on the finger of his glove. Did it fall from his mouth? Was he keeping it there for later? It is someone else’s? (Ew.)

Anyhoo, Jessiman valiantly tried to slide the gum into his mouth with his hockey glove, which turned the whole thing into some convoluted “Double Dare” challenge. At one point it appeared the gum had become sentient and is attacking him.

We’d say it’s the most awkward goal celebration we’ve seen, but then again, we’ve seen this.
