Habs, Leafs, Senators to hold coordinated tribute to fallen soldiers
Since the tragic events in Ottawa on Wednesday, we’ve seen tributes all throughout the hockey world, including some American rinks featuring the singing of “O Canada” before games, plus players Tweeting out their condolences and sending prayers and strength to Canada’s capital.
The Ottawa Senators will be playing their first home game since the events unfolded when they host the New Jersey Devils Saturday night. It will be a very emotional scene inside Canadian Tire Centre when the national anthem is sung.
Before the 7 p.m. ET puck drop, the Senators, along with the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs, who are also be playing at home, will hold a coordinated tribute to Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.
From Senators owner Eugene Melnyk:
“As we continue to reflect on the tragic circumstances surrounding the deaths of two our country’s soldiers on Canadian soil, we do so with heavy hearts” said Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk. “But what doesn’t break us, makes us stronger. Today our country stands more united than ever and so does the entire NHL family. We are very pleased to join forces with the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs in coordinating a unique and special tribute prior our game on Saturday in honour and recognition of these two brave soldiers, their families and all members of our Canadian military.”
Also on Saturday night, one of the Senators’ minor league affiliates will be doing a tribute of their own.
The ECHL’s Evansville IceMen were planning to unveil jerseys resembling the Senators’ current alternates later in the season, but what happened in Ottawa this week caused them to move up the debut date to this Saturday:
The jerseys will be worn several more times this season. At the end of the year, the team will auction them off with a portion of the proceeds benefiting charity.
