Flyers coach Craig Berube won’t spank Jay Rosehill, tells columnist to ‘get lost’
Craig Berube won his first game as an NHL coach on Tuesday night, as the Philadelphia Flyers outlasted the Florida Panthers (who lost Tim Thomas to injury), 2-1.
Winning is one way to endear yourself to Philly fans. Making the local media look foolish is just as effective, and Berube probably gained some brotherly love with this exchange after the game:
Berube was answering a question about forward Jay Rosehill taking a double-minor for roughing and getting a misconduct in the third period. The query was from Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Mike Sielski, who asked if Rosehill would be disciplined for his actions.
Berube’s response:
“What do you want me to do? Spank him? Get lost. That talk’s stupid.”
Score one for the Chief.
The 700 Level reports that Sielski is also the dude who asked Flyers owner Ed Snider whether there needed to be a coach hired outside of “Flyers culture” because the team “hasn’t won a Cup in 38 years.” It was a question that irked Snider and may have ended Berube’s introductory press conference prematurely.
Maybe Berube remembered the face. And maybe, next time, Snider should simply ask rhetorically if the media would like him to spank the Flyers. Because that brought the house down last night.
