Flyers acquire Andrew MacDonald from Islanders for two draft picks, prospect
As Wednesday's 3 p.m. ET NHL trade deadline approaches, New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow has cashed in one of his two chips. Thomas Vanek remains an Islander as they play in Winnipeg Tuesday night. Andrew MacDonald, on the other hand, is not.
The Islanders announced that MacDonald has been dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a third round pick in 2014, a second rounder in 2015 and minor leaguer Matt Mangene.
The Flyers now have three former Islanders in their organization, with Mark Streit, who was acquired and signed last June, and Bruno Gervais, who plays for their AHL affiliate.
MacDonald has 24 points in 63 games, is top 10 in minutes played among all NHL defensemen and leads all players in blocked shots with 198. Those are the positives. The negatives include his possession numbers, getting dominated in his own zone and his reported contract demands, which was reportedly four years and $16 million. Giving up three assets means Flyers GM Paul Holmgren would fancy offering him a contract in the summer.
Those negatives, the on-ice ones at least, could change a bit in Philadelphia. MacDonald isn't a top-2 defenseman and if given a role as a no. 5 or 6, he could fare better.
Either way, this has two Milburys written all over it for the Flyers.
