The Winnipeg Jets made several moves to boost their playoff chances before the trade deadline. The city is pumped – it could be Winnipeg’s first NHL playoff team since 1995-96. But it’s not like the Jets have taken off of late, winning two of their last six games.

Now comes the news that rover/team bouncer Dustin Byfuglien is out for 2-4 weeks with an upper body,  injury per head coach Paul Maurice.

Byfuglien apparently was hurt on this play against Ottawa on Wednesday:

Tough to tell how or what happened there. But damage was clearly done.

So now looking at the playoff picture, the Jets are two points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. The Kings have a game in hand. Winnipeg is without Byfuglien, an All-Star who has 42 points in 65 games as the team’s fourth-leading scorer … goo.

And they’re about to go on a roadtrip and play the Predators, Blues, Panthers and Lightning – four teams either in first or second place in their respective divisions, or at least fighting for the playoffs in Florida’s case.

Well, at least Blake Wheeler is back after missing four games.

Still, with Mathieu Perreault (the team’s fifth-leading scorer) and now Byfuglien out, the Jets are right in the Kings’ crosshairs, which is not an enviable spot at all.
