Devils stay alive with Game 5 victory over Los Angeles, trail series 3-2

NEWARK, NJ — The New Jersey Devils defeated the Los Angeles Kings in Game 5 on Saturday night, 2-1, continuing their quest to become the first team since 1942 to rally from an 0-3 deficit to win the Stanley Cup Final.

Goalie Martin Brodeur was again the team's catalyst, stopping 25 shots and not allowing many second chances for the Kings.

It was the most frantic game of the series, with wide-open play and scoring chances, climaxing in 1:36 of 4-on-4 hockey to end the third period, much of it with the Kings' net empty for an extra skater.

The Devils broke through at 12:45 of the first period on a gaffe by LA goalie Jonathan Quick, who attempted to play the puck but ended up turning it over to New Jersey captain Zach Parise. His wraparound goal was his first of the Final and broke an 0-for-15 slump for the Devils' power play against the Kings.

Justin Williams, who earlier in the game fired a puck off the post, got the equalizer for the Kings at 3:26 of the second period. After taking a Matt Greene pass, Williams skated into the Devils' zone, held up in the slot and allowed Dustin Brown to screen Brodeur. His wrister beat the Devils goalie for the 1-1 tie.

Just under six minutes later, the Devils earned the lead again on a goal Quick has seen before in this series. Defenseman Bryce Salvador fired the puck from the blue line and it deflected off of the Kings' Slava Voynov for the 2-1 lead. The Devils also scored a goal off of Voynov in Game 1.

Game 6 is Monday in Los Angeles.
