Damien Brunner scores spectacular shootout goal; wins game for Red Wings, is ‘Datsyukian’ (VIDEO)
The Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets battled through four rounds of the shootout on Monday night, with players like Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg unable to solve Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.
Then it was rookie Damien Brunner’s turn. And he scored one of the best shootout goals in recent memory to give the Wings a 4-3 win.
As Pierre McGuire said on NBC: It was a Datsyukian dangle from Brunner for the win.
The goal was reviewed, both to check for a rebound shot – Cam Atkinson of the Jackets had a shootout goal waived off for that infraction earlier – but also to ensure that Brunner kept the puck in continuous motion towards the goal. From Rule 24.2:
“The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent’s goal line and once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete.”
He pulled the puck back, but the NHL considers a move like this to all be one continuous motion. It’s the same principle as in the spin-o-rama moves.
What a goal. We’ve seen players that are new to the NHL use the shootout as a calling card before – please recall Linus Omark’s brilliance that ticked off the Tampa Bay Lightning two years ago.
Add Brunner’s name to that list, with this tally on national television. That was straight up nasty.
