The Denver University Pioneers' club hockey team scored a big win over ACHA rivals Utah State University Friday night, thanks to a big overtime goal from defenseman Robert Biedron. With 15 seconds remaining in OT and the Pioneers shorthanded, the puck came to Biedron off a defensive-zone face-off, and he immediately, instinctively, fired it 200 feet into the empty net to win the game.
If you're wondering, no, Utah State did not pull goaltender Keegan McHenry to go 5-on-3 for the final 15 seconds. He was out there... in the corner... chatting up the crowd. He returned to the crease just in time to miss the puck with a desperation dive:
That's extraordinary. A shorthanded, 200-foot, game-winning goal, scored because the goalie was otherwise occupied. I love the literal and figurative pile-on from DU afterwards.
Great awareness from Biedron. McHenry could learn something from him.
You've gotta feel bad for McHenry, actually. He feels pretty terrible:
I am ashamed and disgusted with myself. With what happened and how I acted. I let myself and more importantly, my team down.

It was DU's lone win in three tries over the weekend.
"An overall hard fought weekend by the boys being shorthanded many players," said DU on their Facebook page. "Even though we came out 1-2, we learned we have what it takes to compete with the better teams in our region."
What it takes, in this case, being a hilariously and embarrassingly distracted goalie.
