Chinese player banned for life after using stick to assault opponent
The Chinese Ice Hockey Association handed out its longest suspension ever this week after an incident that took place in their National Ice Hockey League.
Bingyu Lang, a 34-year old forward who represented China’s national team on more than a half dozen occasions, was suspended for life from playing or coaching after he was found guilty by the country's winter sports authority of intentionally using his stick to assault an opponent.
According to IIHF.com, Lang elbowed China’s U20 team captain Peng Huang in the head and then used his stick to stab Huang in the mouth, causing 42 stitches in his cheek and the loss of three teeth.
"It's rare to impose such penalty for a player in Chinese ice hockey. This is one of the most severe penalty," Wang Zhili, deputy director of China Winter Sports Center, was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
"But for such a flagrant injury incident, it just crossed the bottom line of our tolerance. You play a sport match, you should behave like a sportsman, but not a villain.”
According to CRIEnglish.com, Peng’s father is fine with the punishment and does not plan to seek compensation.
Wen Liu, who coached Lang with Qiqihar, was suspended until Nov. 25, 2016 for not doing more to prevent his player from injuring Huang.
