Canadiens snag Jeff Petry from Oilers to add to blueline

Jeff Petry of the Edmonton Oilers is one of those players whose name becomes three sizes too large at the trade deadline as a defenseman with an expiring contract. Seriously, how much mind have you paid Petry before the last few weeks? Edmonton excluded.

But Petry’s a solid stay-at-home type, and his contract is off the books after this season. Add in the fact that the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New York Rangers have added significantly to their defenses, and the Montreal Canadiens decided to make a move for Petry.

The Habs traded a second-round pick and a conditional fifth rounder for Petry. The fifth becomes a fourth-rounder if Montreal makes the second round; it becomes a third if they make the conference finals.

Eyes On The Prize wondered about Petry earlier this week:

Jeff Petry has been about even or better in terms of possession in each of the last five seasons. Granted that is relative to members of an Edmonton Oilers club that has struggled with controlling the play over those years, but Petry has still been the best-performing member of his team while burdened with difficult defensive responsibilities.  He would be an upgrade on Sergei Gonchar, who will turn 41 years old just as the playoffs are about to begin, but the advantage he would offer over Tom Gilbert in a second-pairing situation is debatable.

Nice addition, bolstering a group that needed a bolster and giving Carey Price a little more help. Lord knows he’s earned it.

On the Milbury Scale:

TWO MILBURYS. The Canadiens get a rental who could stick around, but the Oilers fail to pull a first-rounder when every name-value defenseman that’s been traded in the last 72 hours has earned one.
