Cam Ward save of the year candidate vs. Avalanche (Video)
Sometimes it’s not just how you save the puck, but when you save the puck.
Late in the third period on Wednesday night, the Carolina Hurricanes and the Colorado Avalanche were scoreless. The Avs moved in on goalie Cam Ward with an odd-man rush.
Matt Duchene made a nice move around two sprawling Hurricanes defenders, moved to Ward’s right and looked at a gaping net.
Ward didn’t give up on the play. He lunged with his stick. And he deflected Duchene’s shot away for one of the better saves we’ve seen in this young season. And it was a big one, as the Hurricanes went on to win in overtime, 1-0.
That one looked like it hurt for Duchene. But that typically happens when you get the paddle.
