Brad Marchand sets Bruins record for fastest goal

Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins is on a ridiculous goal-scoring tear, having scored 12 of them in his last 12 games entering Sunday afternoon’s contest at the Detroit Red Wings.

He didn’t waste any time making it 13-in-13.

Marchand took a Brett Connolly faceoff win and snapped the puck past Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek just eight seconds into their game, his 28th goal of the season.

The goal set a Boston Bruins record for fastest to start a game, breaking Mackell Fleming’s mark of nine seconds set in Feb. 1953. Holy Mackell!

Alas, Marchand missed the NHL record for fastest goal to start a game, by a nose: Four players have scored five seconds after the opening faceoff, with Alex Mogilny the latest to net one in Dec. 1991 for the Buffalo Sabres.

The goal matched Marchand’s career high for a season, as he had 28 in 76 games back in 2011-12. He’s only in game No. 51 this season. Hell of a year for the perennial pest.
