Andrej Sekera traded to LA Kings in aggressive deadline move

The worst-kept secret of the NHL trade deadline was that the Los Angeles Kings would add a body to their blue line, which had been depleted all year with the arrest and suspension of Slava Voynov on domestic violence charges.

On Wednesday, five days before the trade deadline, GM Dean Lombardi made his move: Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera, who makes $2.75 million against the cap and goes unrestricted this summer.

And an aggressive move it was: L.A. sent a first-round pick and prospect Roland McKeown to the Canes for Sekera.

McKeown was acquired in the Linden Vey trade with the Vancouver Canucks. He’s a 6-1 defenseman who was taken No. 50 overall in 2014.

The pick in the deal goes to Carolina this season if the Kings make the playoffs, and next season if the Kings miss the playoffs, per Elliotte Friedman. So, in essence, lottery protected. (The Kings would draft No. 14 at the moment.)

Sekera was second on the Canes in average ice time at 22:46, playing in all situations. He had 19 points in 57 games this season, down from his awesome 44-point performance in 2013-14. But then again, the Hurricanes have been hot garbage all season; and Sekera still managed to be a possession driver.

He brings another left-handed shot to the Kings blue line, as Jake Muzzin and Alec Martinez and Robyn Regehr all shoot lefty. And he's a Slovakian, which means he can play with his countrymen Marian Gaborik and Anze Kopitar. Wait, Slovenia? What's a Slovenia?

This is a big enough name for us to whip out our first Milbury Scale of the season:

THREE MILBURYS. The Kings do well for themselves here, and even if the pick turns out to be an NHL player, it's lottery protected for the McDavid Derby. So that's a win.
