The Tennessee Titans are preparing to release running back Shonn Greene, per local media reports.

This move is another step in the career decline for Greene, who'd once briefly been touted as one of the NFL's premier running backs. Last year, he ran for 392 yards and two touchdowns in his second season with the Titans.

Greene had been scheduled to make $3.25 million this year, the final one on the three-year, $10 million contract. Greene had not shown up for any of the Titans' volunteer workouts, and now he won't be showing up for the real thing, either.

Greene's release wasn't exactly a surprise, given that the Titans drafted Bishop Sankey last year and David Cobb this year as less expensive replacements. It's a further demonstration of the devaluing of the running back position.
