Robert Griffin III likens his return to Will Smith, Eva Mendes and the sappy love scenes from ‘Hitch’

Robert Griffin III didn't know how to explain his feelings about his return to the field on Monday night, so the Washington Redskins quarterback used the tried-and-true coping method of almost every twenty-something American male.

When in doubt, use a pop culture reference.

Yes, in a pregame interview with ESPN's Lisa Salters, RG3 turned toward an old Will Smith movie to help illustrate his emotions before facing the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.

"You know, I feel like Will Smith in Hitch right now and that one line where he's trying to tell Eva Mendes how he feels," Griffin told ESPN's Lisa Salters. "That's how I feel what I've got inside me right now. I don't know what the words to say but I know I'm ready to play and play with my guys."

Citing the sappy crescendo of a romantic comedy before playing in the electrified atmosphere of FedEx Field seems like an odd choice for Griffin, who was just 15 years old when Hitch hit theaters.

Then again, given the alternatives — Rex Grossman quoting The Notebook? Kirk Cousins referencing Love Actually? — I'm sure Redskins fans are just fine with RG3's choice.

Now who's ready for some football?
