Report: Tim Tebow could seek trade in 2013 offseason

According to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News, Tim Tebow could be one and done with the New York Jets.

Citing an NFL source (whatever that means in this particular case), Myers writes that Tebow will play the role of good soldier in 2012, but if he is not the starting quarterback for the Jets, and continues to serve in a limited role on offense (and special teams), he would likely request a trade to a team that will give him a chance to earn the starting quarterback job.

"At the end of the year, I think he will express those concerns to the Jets. He will want to move on," the source told Myers. "The one thing about Tebow is he is the quintessential team player. He would never do anything that is going to undermine the team. But he's football-aholic. It's in his blood…

"Absolutely he will talk to the Jets or we will have misevaluated his competitive nature. There comes a point, where they get it and realize this is who I am and just accept that role. Tebow is not there yet."

Acquired from the Denver Broncos on March 22, Tebow was unable to unseat Mark Sanchez for the Jets' starting quarterback job during the preseason and, despite being No. 1 in the media pecking order, is currently No. 2 on the depth chart. In his debut for Gang Green, Tebow played 10 snaps on offense and four snaps on special teams, gaining 11 yards on five rushing attempts and, in what was perhaps his largest contribution to Sunday's 48-28 win over the Buffalo Bills, recovered an onside kick attempt after the Bills had cut the Jets' lead to 13 points with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Tebow's contract could be an issue in a future trade. As former NFL front office executive and player agent Andrew Brandt reported in March, in order to finalize the trade with the Broncos, the Jets agreed to repay Denver $2.53 million of the salary advance that Tebow had received in 2010. The Jets are paying off $1.5 million of that amount this season, with another $1.03 million due next season. If/when Tebow asks for a trade, that $1.03 million plus a base salary of $2,586,875 in 2013 will make it very difficult for the Jets to get good value on a quarterback who, if a trade is requested, would not have been able to unseat Sanchez.
