Report: Referees reveal word that Kaepernick used in inappropriate-language penalty

In the course of the San Francisco 49ers' meltdown against the Chicago Bears last Sunday night, Colin Kaepernick drew a flag for "inappropriate language." Kaepernick denied saying anything wrong to defensive end Lamarr Houston, but side judge Laird Hayes countered that Kaepernick "knows what he said."

Now, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer is reporting that referees said Kaepernick used the n-word. Kaepernick has denied using the word, and is appealing the $11,025 fine that accompanied the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

After Sunday's loss to Arizona, the mood in the San Francisco locker room was tense, and Kaepernick did not waver from his denial of his use of the word. Here's a transcript of the news conference:

Q: There is a report today that you said a racial slur in the Bears’ game and that’s why you were penalized and fined. What’s your reaction to that?

Kaepernick: I’ve talked about that already.

Q: Are you saying you didn’t say anything?

Kaepernick: I’ve said that in the past and I’ll say it again.

Q: There is video of you saying something. It shows you saying something to Lamarr Houston.

Kaepernick: I didn’t say anything racially derogatory to him.

Q: But you said the other day that you didn’t say anything.

Kaepernick: I talk on the football field, yes I do.

Earlier this year, the NFL announced its intentions to begin taking a closer look at on-field language. The NFL called six abusive-language penalties through the first two weeks of this year's preseason.
