Ravens, 49ers combine to set or tie 18 records in Super Bowl XLVII

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco walked away with Most Valuable Player honors, but wide receiver/return specialist Jacoby Jones had a hand in seven of the 18 Super Bowl records that were set or tied in the Ravens' 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday night, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Three of those Super Bowl records were set on one play when Jones took opening kick of the second half 108 yards for a touchdown, which was the longest play, longest kick return and longest kick return for a touchdown in Super Bowl history. Jones also caught one pass for 56 yards, which went for a touchdown late in the first half that gave the Ravens a 21-3 lead, and gained 28 yards on a pair of punt returns.

Jones' 290 combined yards are a new Super Bowl record.

Boosted by his 108-yard return, Jones had 206 kick return yards on Sunday night. 49ers return specialists LaMichael James (3-75) and Ted Ginn (1-31) combined for 106 yards, giving the two teams 312 kick return yards on the night, which also set a new Super Bowl record. The 49ers and Ravens also combined for the longest game in Super Bowl history, with the game clocking in at four hours and 14 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick set a record with a 15-yard touchdown run, the longest touchdown by a quarterback in Super Bowl history.

In addition to the seven records that were set, 11 Super Bowl records were tied on Sunday night, including two by Jones.

Jones tied the Super Bowl for touchdowns of 50+ yards in a game with two - his 56-yard touchdown reception and 108-yard kick return. Jones also tied the record for most kickoff return touchdowns in a game with one. 49ers tight end Vernon Davis tied a Super Bowl record for receiving yards in a game by a tight end with 104. The other individual record tied on Sunday night belongs to 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver, who was credited with a safety after Ravens punter Sam Koch deliberately ran out of bounds to chew more time off the clock in the game's final moments.

The remaining seven Super Bowl records stem from the efforts, some combined, of the Ravens and 49ers.

The 49ers tied the Super Bowl record for number of safeties in a game (one) and for most players with 100 or more receiving yards in a game (two, Davis and Michael Crabtree). The Ravens tied the record for fewest rushing touchdowns in a game (zero). The Ravens and 49ers combined for most points scored in the third quarter (24, with the 49ers scoring 17 and the Ravens seven), most field goals (five; three by the 49ers, two by the Ravens) and most field goals without a miss, a record that was tied after David Akers' 39-yard miss was negated by a very questionable running into the penalty on Ravens cornerback Chykie Brown.
