Next Man(ziel) up? Browns' Josh McCown breaks collarbone, out for year

Oh, Cleveland. You have our sympathies. Not only did the Browns lose Monday night's game to division rival Baltimore in the most Brownsian way possible, when their potential game-winning field goal was blocked and returned for the game-winning touchdown by the Ravens' Will Hill, it appears they've also lost their starting quarterback.

Citing a league source, Cleveland Plain-Dealer beat writer Mary Kay Cabot reported after the game that Josh McCown had possibly suffered a broken collarbone in the loss, leaving FirstEnergy Stadium with his right arm in a sling.

Cabot reported that even if McCown's collarbone isn't broken, the source said it is likely serious enough that his season is over.

McCown will have x-rays taken Tuesday morning to determine whether there is a fracture; NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted that McCown is still in significant pain.

UPDATE: On a conference call Tuesday afternoon, Browns coach Mike Pettine said x-rays confirmed a fracture, and McCown is out for the season. Pettine also said he's not ready to choose between Johnny Manziel or Austin Davis as the starter going forward, and that the team has discussed bringing in another quarterback.

McCown had thrown for 212 yards and a touchdown before the injury, which happened late in the third quarter, after he was drilled by Timmy Jernigan. Though McCown was in visible pain, he returned to the game, trying two more plays before giving in to the pain, sitting down on the field after a deep pass attempt.

He went to the locker room soon after, the offense in the hands of Davis. Davis did lead the Browns to the game-tying touchdown, and the Cleveland defense got him the ball with just under a minute to play after intercepting Matt Schaub. The offense picked up 13 yards, giving kicker Travis Coons a 51-yard attempt, which was ultimately blocked.

Davis was 7-of-10 for 77 yards and a touchdown.

The question now for the 2-9 Browns: will they ride out the season with Davis, or go back to Manziel?

Manziel was active for Monday night's game, but was demoted to third-string last week, after video surfaced of the second-year quarterback partying in Austin, Texas during Cleveland's bye, just days after coach Mike Pettine had decided to let Manziel start the rest of the season.

That was bad enough for Manziel, who spent time at a rehab facility earlier this year, and who had been asked by team brass to stay close to the facility during the break. But Manziel reportedly lied to the Browns about how old the video was, and told his friends to lie for him too, sealing his fate.

The Browns and Titans are tied for the worst record in the AFC, and with last night's loss, Cleveland will finish the season with a sub-.500 record even if it wins out the remainder of its schedule.

Though Manziel did show improvement on the field in the starts he got during McCown's earlier injuries (he missed time with a concussion and rib injury), his off the field behavior and continued immaturity are a concern. Should the Browns reverse course and have Manziel start the rest of the year, despite his recent deception? Or just let Davis, who went 3-5 for the Rams last year, play out the string?

On Monday night, Pettine couldn't tell reporters what the Browns' plan would be.

"We'll watch the tape and discuss that (Tuesday),'' he said. "I'm not prepared to answer that just yet."
