Darrelle Revis and Richard Sherman engage in Twitter war of top cornerbacks

Darrelle Revis took the bait.

After a month of subtle needling from Seattle Seahawks All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman, both on Twitter and in media interviews, the three-time All-Pro cornerback for the New York Jets publicly responded to Sherman on social media:

Sherman sparked this battle in January when the 2011 fifth-round pick out of Stanford compared his statistics to Revis' numbers. "Women lie, men lie, numbers don't lie", Sherman wrote accompanied by a side-by-side image of his and Revis' statistics. Sherman also retweeted posts from his followers that supported his argument and had a quick response to those who mention the valid point that Revis has been among the least-targeted cornerbacks in the NFL the last few seasons.

Nobody wins in social media dust-ups like this, and Revis probably should have taken the high road as boxing judge and analyst Harold Lederman would likely have Sherman ahead on his scorecard. Revis loses points for using the word "girl" as if it were some kind of an insult and then resorted to a followers count, as if that would send Sherman cowering back to his corner. The only way this spat will truly be resolved is on the field. Since Sherman played wide receiver at Stanford before moving to cornerback, if their paths ever do cross within the white lines, we might actually see that happen.
