From the combine: As expected, Tavon Austin and Marquise Goodwin run blistering 40 times

INDIANAPOLIS -- Two receivers came into the 2013 scouting combine expecting (and expected) to run amazing times in the 40-yard dash. West Virginia's Tavon Austin and Texas' Marquise Goodwin might be the two fastest players in this draft class, and they each took off with authority in their unofficial 40 times. Both Austin and Goodwin ran unofficial times of 4.25 in their 40s, and most importantly, both players have on-field speed that matches their track times.

Officially, Goodwin was clocked at 4.27, while Austin ran a 4.34. Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson's record time of 4.24 at the 2008 combine still stands.

I was specifically impressed with Goodwin's speed and agility at the Senior Bowl, and Austin looks absolutely cartoonish at times on tape.

"I’m trying to run at 4.3 or maybe a 4.2," Austin said on Friday. He ran a 4.29 in his pre-combine training, which shouldn't be a surprise, considering his track history. He finished 10th in the long jump at the 2012 Olympics, and he's been a cross-country star for years.

As for Goodwin, he came into this combine certain that he'd blaze the track right up. He disappointed at his own 2012 Olympic trials, but started to look better as a pure football player in his 2012 season.

"I’m looking to run at least one of the fastest times if not the fastest," Goodwin said this week. "I'm really looking to prove I’m more than just a speed guy. That I can run routes."

Chris Johnson ran the fastest official 40-yard-dash in combine history at 4.24, but this was expected to be a year in which a few speedsters could challenge that mark. Even if Goodwin's and Austin's official times come up short, they both did themselves some favors on the track.
