Chiefs sign former Falcons CB Dunta Robinson to three-year contract

NFL teams can't sign soon-to-be free agents currently under contract with their current teams until next Tuesday, but released players are fair game, and the Kansas City Chiefs snapped up just such a player on Friday night. As first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Chiefs continued a very busy offseason by signing cornerback Dunta Robinson to a three-year deal. Terms have not yet been disclosed.

Robinson was released by the Atlanta Falcons on Mar. 1, three years into a six-year, $54 million deal he signed in 2010. Selected by the Houston Texans with the 10th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft out of South Carolina, the 5-foot-10, 172-poond Robinson picked off 13 passes for the Texans in six seasons. The Falcons made him the centerpiece of their secondary with that huge deal in March of 2010, but he intercepted just four passes in three years for Atlanta.

In 2012, per Pro Football Focus, Robinson allowed a 102.4 quarterback rating on 504 passing snaps. He gave up 64 receptions on 97 targets for 835 yards (300 after the catch) for four touchdowns and one interception. Still, Chiefs cornerback Javier Arenas allowed similar productivity in 2012, so Robinson may be seen as a veteran stopgap for a young defense that ranked 31st against the pass in Football Outsiders' opponent-adjusted metrics. A move to safety in the long term may be in the cards for the hard-tackling Robinson, who turns 31 in April. He's been fined twice for illegal hits -- $50,000 for a hit on Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson in Oct. 2010, and $40,000 for a hit on Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin in Sept., 2011.

The Robinson signing is the latest in a series of moves for new Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey. Reid and Dorsey have also re-signed receiver Dwayne Bowe and Dustin Colquitt, placed the franchise tag on offensive tackle Branden Albert, traded for quarterback Alex Smith, and re-structured the contract of defensive lineman Tyson Jackson.
