Aldon Smith adds a couple of sacks, Strahan’s single-season record in reach

Aldon Smith has broken the 49ers' single-season sack record that stood for 29 years. His 19.5 sacks this season is a number many top-notch pass rushers will never approach. And Smith still has three games to add to that total.

Michael Strahan might want to enjoy the single-season sacks record over the next few weeks. His time owning that record could be running out.

Smith had two more sacks against Miami on Sunday. He broke Fred Dean's team record of 17.5 sacks, set in 1983, with his first sack of the game. He needs a half-sack to get 20 in a season, something that has happened only eight times in NFL history. And he could end up at the top of that single-season list.

Strahan had 22.5 sacks in 2001, setting the NFL record. Smith seems poised to pass that mark even if he won't have Brett Favre around to gift wrap the record-breaker like Strahan did. Smith, a second-year player who had 14 sacks as a rookie last year, has had at least one sack in seven straight games. He might not gain much ground in his next two games against New England and Seattle, which were fourth and 10th in the NFL in fewest sacks allowed coming into this week. But his last game this season could be a bonanza, against the Arizona Cardinals. Through 12 games, Arizona's 48 sacks allowed were nine more than any other team.

If Smith can inch closer to 22.5 before that season finale, Strahan's record will be in serious jeopardy. If Smith hasn't broken it before then.
