Western Kentucky recovers wacky accidental onside kick (Video)

Western Kentucky’s attempted squib kick had unexpected results.

Already up 49-14 over Middle Tennessee State late in the first half, the Hilltoppers hoped to avoid a long return by squibbing it to an upback. Instead, WKU’s Ryan Nuss kicked the ball directly off MTSU’s Derek Barnes and the Hilltoppers pounced on the live ball.

The fumble recovery allowed the Hilltoppers to add on to their lead via a Garrett Schwettman 31-yard field goal. The field goal gave WKU a commanding 52-14 lead at halftime.

The Hilltoppers look like a lock to improve to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in Conference USA play.
