West Virginia S Karl Joseph out for season

West Virginia safety Karl Joseph is out for the year after suffering a non-contact knee injury at practice.

An integral piece of West Virginia's defense, Joseph has started every game in his West Virginia career. He's a senior, so his college career is now over.

“I am devastated and heartbroken for Karl,” West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said in a statement. “He is a young man who has given everything he has to our football program and University over the past four years and who elected to return to WVU for his senior season to earn his degree and to be a part of something special with this team. He exemplifies what it means to be a Mountaineer. Karl is an All-American, a fierce competitor, a leader and I know he will have a full recovery, and I can’t wait to watch him on Sundays next fall.”

Joseph is currently second on the team in tackles and had five interceptions in four games. Three of those interceptions came in the third quarter of the team's season-opening game against Georgia Southern. He's been one of the best defensive backs in the country through the first five weeks of 2015.

“I want to thank my teammates and my coaches for their outpouring of support,” Joseph said. “This has been difficult for me and my family but I know I will come through this stronger than ever.  I will forever be a Mountaineer and will be cheering on our team every step of the way.”

Joseph has 284 career tackles and nine interceptions. West Virginia, 3-1, is at home against Oklahoma State on Saturday. Jarrod Harper is listed as Joseph's backup at strong safety. Harper has four tackles and a sack and has appeared in all four games.
