West Virginia 'anticipates' Will Grier to be eligible in 2017

West Virginia believes Will Grier will be able to play when the 2017 season begins.

Grier, the former Florida quarterback, transferred to West Virginia in April. Had Grier stayed at Florida, he wouldn't have been eligible to play until the seventh game of the season because of a year-long NCAA suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.

As a transfer, Grier is required to sit out the 2016 season. And it appears that he'll be able to serve his suspension while he's already required to miss the season.

“Will Grier enrolled for classes here at WVU on May 16," West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said in a statement. "With the timing of his transfer, and the requirements that he has to finish from the NCAA, I cannot officially confirm his eligibility until the summer of 2017.  However, I fully anticipate him being eligible for the opening game of the 2017 season.”

If he would have stayed at Florida, he would have been able to play 2.5 more seasons of college football. Now that he's at West Virginia, he can play the two full remaining seasons of his eligibility by switching schools.

(Update: Our original math was incorrect regarding Grier's transfer. He redshirted in 2014 and as such, his 2016 season counts as a season of eligibility.)

Current West Virginia quarterback Skyler Howard is a senior in 2016 and Grier – assuming he is eligible – will be the heavy favorite to take over for him.

The Gators were 6-0 in Grier's time as a starter in 2015. He was 106-161 passing for 1,206 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.
